World of Tanks expands on two new fronts

from the never get involved in a land war in Asia dept. has added two new battle maps to their English-language closed beta test, bringing the total up to 12. Komarin features a small rural village setting in Eastern Europe while Cliff (pictured below) resembles the coastline of Normandy.

BigWorld goes social at GDC Online

BigWorld Technology will soon be available in your favourite web browser. You will be able to run MMOs, virtual worlds and online persistent games in a Windows-PC based browser using BigWorld’s Web Player plug-in. The browser plug-in complements the existing full-screen PC client/server and server-only solutions for consoles and mobile devices. The company will be demonstrating the new technology at the upcoming GDC Online conference in Austin, Texas during October.

Chief Technology Officer of BigWorld, Simon Hayes, said that “The social and casual gaming markets present their own unique challenges – ideally you want to get the game content to the gamer in the quickest, hassle-free way and as cheaply as possible. The BigWorld Web Player brings the solid technology underlying numerous BigWorld Technology online games in the market today to a new arena – PC browsers, with a minimum of installation, security, or development overhead.”  The Web Player plug-in will support Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome and Safari.

BigWorld staff will be available for developer meetings and media interviews at GDC Online at the Austin Convention Centre, Texas, from October 5 – 8, 2010. Email to arrange an appointment.
