We’ve been watching the VIE (Virtual Island of Entertainment) blog over the past few weeks, as they’ve been using posts to unfold a still-fairly-mysterious narrative about travelers landing on VIE island and trying to find each other. The reason we mention this (besides the fact, of course, that VIE’s a BigWorld-powered game) is because we’re intrigued by the superimposition of narrative in unique ways onto the substrate of a virtual space… and it furthers the overall world concept pretty awesomely.
Eliot Lefebvre over at Massively has shared some first impressions of VIE, one of the newest Western market titles being built on BigWorld. VIE’s a social virtual world designed as an idyllic island paradise, within which users compete, shop, socialize, and so forth. The world presents a unique case for the microtransaction model, mixed with structured gameplay, which has many of us very curious.
The ensuing conversation in the comments section, at the very least, is worth a look.
VIE or Virtual Island of Entertainment is trying something a little different. From their website :
VIE™: Virtual Island of Entertainment is a mature 3D virtual world and social experience that invites adults to escape and indulge in its island paradise.
Luxuriate in fashion, shopping, games, mysteries and quests amidst the powerful and supernatural in this free-to-play resort. Explore and indulge in the wonders of VIE.
If you are interested, you should wander over and sign up for the beta.

PC users with even relatively modest gaming machines can now experience BigWorld in a web browser. Internet Explorer and Firefox users on PC can try this beta link to have a look at a small, 40MB minimum spec world. Support for other browsers is on the way, but keep in mind this is a *beta* demonstration. BigWorld staff will be at Cologne Gamescom next week – email to appointments(at)bigworldtech.com to line up a live demonstration.
