Wargaming.net has taken the time to answer 30 or so questions from their community regarding their upcoming BigWorld-powered title World of Warplanes.

The full Q&A is here, but here are a few excerpts…

Mid Air Collision? Are we having them? Or are the Planes Ghost Planes and can fly through Each other?

Mid Air Collision will surely be implemented. It will reduce aircraft HP depending aircraft speed, weight, damaged module etc. as in WoT. If you are an experienced and lucky player you will be able to perform deliberate ram attacks, chopping off enemy’s aircraft tail with an airscrew.

Will the fight start with the planes in the air or will we have to take off from a runway, if we do have to take off from a runway will we are able to land again? either to get repairs or ammo ? WWII planes i believe never really had that much ammo on them

Aircraft will be spawned in the air at the beginning of the battle. As an option, you will be able to land the aircraft at the end of the battle and successful landing will give you additional experience. Unsuccessful landing will break the plane and will cost repairing.

Will WOWP have muti-core support?

It already has it.

Night missions – will they be implemented and if so, will there be tracer rounds available for purchase?

We are discussing such night battle modes

…the game is a must. And if you’re tiring of elves, demons and aliens, you may find the experience of watching your enemies scatter or be blown to shards by the rumbling might of your Tiger tank just a bit more visceral.

Suddenly my fellow pilots in Eve Online, the sprawling science-fiction universe, were debating whether the Soviet IS-4 could stand up against the German Ferdinand and whether the American Pattoncould deal with the game version of the Soviet T-54.

Giving richer players an advantage would usually be a huge turnoff, but it succeeds in World of Tanks because teamwork and skill are much more important than a little bit more firepower.

from the surfacing desk

Games marketing Guru Frazer Nash recently joined the Wargaming.net ranks full-time. TenTonHammer sat down with him and talked recently-announced, BigWorld-powered World of Battleships.

Some quick takeaways…

No submarines, to mitigate the griefer in us all

Formation important

AI planes launchable from carriers

Nash utilizes the game’s published concept art as a means to explain the fundamentals of the game…

“This is your game, this is your view,” he began, gesturing at the image above. “The destroyers are in completely the wrong place. Those two should be screening the battleship, protecting it from aircraft. Off in the distance you see an aircraft carrier… it’s dead. It may be floating now, but trust me, it’s dead. It should be on the complete inside of the formation… alone it’s extremely vulnerable.”

Carriers take the place of SPGs, battleships take the place of heavy tanks, and then cruisers, frigates, destroyers, PT boats, and the like will fill out the skirmish, scout, and anti-aircraft roles.

A brief bit on World of Warplanes tells us that: players will start in the air, a new aiming reticle will provide realtime damage information to attackers, and that the game puts players in the “sexy period of combat aviation, before guided weapons, stealth, and so on,” quoth the Frazer.

2 million are now registered in Russia alone, while Europe and the US host over a million players and climbing fast. With the release last month in China, we’re certain that this is just the beginning of World of Tank’s meteoric rise.

“At the very beginning of development for World of Tanks, we were assuming that the maximum number would be around 600,000 players worldwide. Now, we have 2 million registrations in Russia alone, not to mention the Western audience and its immense growth,” said Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi. “With the tremendous number we’ve reached in Russia as well as the dynamics of community growth in Europe and North America, we are looking forward to the many more milestones to come.”

from the hyperbole dept.

The BigWorld-powered World of Tanks MMO has been receiving quite a bit of press attention recently, but this one surprised even us.

Behold the latest development in a long string of awesome emanating from Wargaming Studios in Minsk: La Gargantua.

The massive “treaded fortress” apparently sports a long-range impulse rail turret, mine-laying capabilities, and a host of other yet-to-be-revealed functions.

This news has the BigWorld team questioning a number of its assumptions about reality, but also whether or not this signals a new change in the theme of the until-now period-based tank warfare game. Should we be expecting even more futuristic tech appearing from vortices across the WoT world? Steampunk, anyone?…. anyone?…. Bueller?

Still, rumors suggest that this may be the work of an independent faction or individual using the BigWorld Indie development license.

At the very least, the WoT player community can’t complain any longer about Russian tanks being overpowered. This unprovenonced beast now takes the cake… and basically anything else it wants to take….

Yikes.

GD: Which will take center stage realism of gameplay? Or are we looking at a blend? If so what sort of split should we expect, 50/50, 20/80?

A good balance between realism and captivating gameplay – that’s what we are looking for. However, it’s rather hard to tell the proportion of each component in the game. As I’ve already said we’re not going to create absolutely realistic gameplay or introduce realistic controls as it’s just impossible. Alternatively, we are focusing more on tactics and cooperation within a team. We already see our beta-testers setting up well-coordinated attacks or making ambushes according to military guidelines of the day with flanking maneuvers, encirclements of enemy groups and strict distribution of roles in a battle, even though Clan Wars have not yet been implemented. That’s where realism is preserved. Regarding combat characteristics of military hardware, they are close to those of real tanks, though not completely identical, because the tank is not just a combination of such features as speed, armor plating or rate of fire… It has an enormous number of parameters that can be hardly modeled or even estimated. If we take a look at two T-34 tanks – one produced in 1942 and one in 1943 – we’ll see vehicles with different characteristics because they undergone changes almost every month. So we use a generalized image (or a “legend”) of a tank and construct its digital prototype.

With thanks to Game Debate.
